well i live in Atlanta and i want to be a type of doctor/surgeon and i hear it's about 4 years of college and 4 years of medical school then residency, this "4 years of college" is done in a state college like University of Georgia? or can it be done in Emory University? does anyone know if both schools offer medical programs to become doctors, i mean do i take like a state college for the first 4 years then switch to a different one for medical school? i'm confused, anyway any help is appreciated, thanks.

Where you do the first 4 years or undergraduate education is open to you to a point. Getting into medical school is very competitive and they give different schools different ratings and different degree programs different ratings when comparing potential students for medical school. You do not have to major in pre-med in undergraduate school, but a degree in a pre med program will be stronger on an application than a major in education with a secondary in biology. Which school stands up better in a comparison. A degree from most private schools will be stonger than a degree from a state school. And all state schools in a state will not be equal either. A major University will be stronger than most small regional state schools. This all assumes that your grades are almost perfect at whichever school choose. Where you go to medical school is again determined later, and you may end up in another state or another part of your own state. The better the medical school the stonger your applications to residency programs will be. A person going to undergrad at University of Pennsylvania and Med School at Harvard will be more likely to get the residency of their choice than a person going to West Georgia under grad and University of North Texas HSC for med school. Again wherever you go you will be a doctor, but the better the schools you go to, the more options are open to you.

Again all this assumes that the grades of the two people being compared are similar.

Also considered are your MCAT scores and interviews and any letters of recommendation you have.

My son is a MD now. He did his first four years a St. Mary's University in San Antonio, they did not offer pre-med He got a BS, he applied to University of Texas and was accepted there and did his Medical school , and then again the University of Texas but in another part of Texas to do his Internship and residency, and al tow fellowships. Where you go the first four years makes no difference and what you have your degree in makes no difference either, but I will make the suggestion that you get a BS as opposed to a BA. I want to point out that after 8 years you can call yourself Doctor but you are going to look at another 3 to 5 years before you start to practice medicine

Note; You must remember this, everyone that goes to Medical School are among the very brightest of people, anything that you can do to make you look better is what is needed. I will tell you something about Medical Schools that I heard when my son went to medical school. the question was asked,"which Medical school is the very best?" and the answer was, "The one that accepts you."

You need to take the full load of science classes, biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry or whatever advanced science classes you HS offers. Other classes are dependent on the requirements for a HS diploma. If your school offers it, I'd suggest Latin, which will really help with a lot of medical vocabulary. Greek is also useful, but not commonly taught. I'd also suggest you volunteer at the local hospital.
