However they want me to wait until the check clears before I send them anything. The check has been returned to my bank causing me extra fees. Why would they spend the money to over night me a check and then let me wait until it clears if is was just going to be returned? I did not give them any of my account information. Can anyone tell me what purpose this served?

It is a scam. The fraudsters will create a check drawing funds from an actual account, like from a public company. The check will "clear" then later found to be fraudlent

A quick search on the internet will provide lots of examples. Check out:

Ask yourself, Why would they send you a check in the first place? It's a scam!!! How do they know you and do you know them? You would have a better chance of getting money by playing the lottery. Slim to none. ...Good Luck...

This is a scam...don't buy into it. The next thing that you will have to give them is access to your bank accounts!

YOU got the fees - they didn't.

You should talk to the Post Office. This may be mail fraud.
