What is the difference between the Pentium E6420, E6550 or E6850, etc?

Why is it so many manufacturers are still using E6420? Isn't it outdated by now?

Is there any specifics in each Pentium that I should take note of?

I am a novice to the quad processors.

Is it similar in design to the Core 2 Duo Processors and the Socket 775 system?

Is it assemble in a similar to the Core 2 Duo system?

E6420: FSB - 1066 MHz, CPU multiplier - 8x
E6550: FSB - 1333 MHz, CPU multiplier - 7x
E6850: FSB - 1333 MHz, CPU multiplier - 9x

All three processors has the same size L2 cache.

Short answer, no, the E6420 isn't that outdated. The only thing the E6x50 line brought was a higher front side bus. The higher the FSB, the faster the computer will be (the FSB is the speed at which the CPU talks with the Northbridge - this controls memory, etc.). Having a higher FSB is great, but it also limits your ability to overclock.

Also, these aren't Pentium chips. The Pentium line is dead. These processors have a brand new architecture and a new name - Core 2 Duo.

The main specs you want to look for are FSB, multiplier, TDP (thermal design power - the amount of power that needs to be disapated), and process technology - the size of the transistors. You need a high FSB, high multiplier, low TDP, and low process technology.

None of those are Pentiums. They are Core 2 Duo's.

When you look at the prices and performance you wonder why anyone would buy an E6850 when they could get a QX6850 which is 2.5 times as fast for the same price.

An E6420 is probably destined for a budget system.

All of them have different speeds.
E6420 2133 MHz $201.99
Rendering time = 1:36
E6550 2333 MHz $175.99
Rendering time = 1:27
E6850 3000 MHz $299.99
Rendering time = 1:09
Core 2 Quad Q6600 $279.99
Rendering time = 0:47
Core 2 Extreme QX6850 $299.99
Rendering time = 0:39

Rendering time, lower number is faster

Higher the # faster the speed is not the case as this can be proved eg say you have a 750mhz processor thn you went to a 1000mhz processor you will actually find that their is no real difference sound's daft but it is true.

they are core 2 duo processors i believe and not pentiums. they have different processor technology than pentiums and no they are not outdated. they are kinda the standard of today's processors. each of them also have different clock speeds and some have different Front Side Buses and L2 caches.

do a comparison here:

the difference is the ones that can process more things at once and go faster cost more. just like everything else. tough steak is cheaper than aged marbled beef. you get what you pay for. that is my humble opinion.
