Think for a second, "All woman when they turn 18 must register for selective service or lose college loans, etc." This is 2007. We all benefit from living in America. It is wrong to mandate only males serve in the military if a draft is put in place. Ladies, you should be as vocal for young men as you would if only young women had to register. You can't have both ways.

Wyomingrider: I respect your opinion but, I could not disagree with you more. Selective service is not a draft but a database to locate you if we did have a draft. The "generally" argument may have been accepted by many in the 1940's but not in 2007.

Being an outstanding member of the military in 2007 is not just about brute force. I don't know any women that would agree with your reasons for excluding them from selective service.

In this great nation it would deny half of us the opportunity for success to do the job. I also believe it is condescending even in "general" terms to hold on to those views about women.

Personally, I agree with you. If there were to be a draft, women would have to be included. (Then again, I also think I should get equal pay as men, but I generally don't get it.) BUT, I don't agree with the drafting of college students, and I don't agree that some people can dodge the draft. Annnd, I hope to God that its never instated again.

The selective service system is simply a registration process. The "draft" is a mechanism which, when it is used, makes use of the results of that registration process. Beyond a few non-combatant voluntary roles, women should not be used as a subject for selective service. It's a very bad idea. In the history of governments, military organizations and wars, the primary role of women has been to produce male offspring for military service. Such a fact may be offensive but it is quite true; I would urge that you read the history of military conflict and you will have no choice but to discover this fact.

It was my impression that military service was now voluntary. And I see many females in the military here (F.E.Warren A.F.B. in Cheyenne).

Should a draft be reimposed, I do not think women should be REQUIRED to submit. There are various reasons for this (and none of them are based on sexism).

Men are generally stronger than women. Men are generally more adept at hand/eye co-ordination and similar feats. Men are generally more aggressive. Men generally have increased endurance over women.

This indicates that men generally (and I know there are women who can perform as well as men---but we are talking generally here) would make better soldiers.

You also have the factor of mixed company in close quarters during stressful periods. Distractions of this sort are not conducive to wartime conditions. (I suppose you could have companies composed entirely of women to overcome this obstacle though).

This does not mean women cannot perform other military duties however (which they have done in all previous wars).

if it ever comes to a time when we truly need the draft, it would mean we were pretty desperate for troops, so i say women should have to join to.

THINK FOR A MINUTE--IF ALL WOMEN WENT TO WAR AND WERE KILLED WHO WOULD BEAR OUR NEXT GENERATION?HAVE NOT KNOWN OF A MALE CONSEPTION YET? NOW IF A WOMAN WANTS TO JOIN MAKE IT HER RIGHT --SELECTIVE SERVICE WAS ABOLISHED IN THE 1970'S--THANK GOD -IT WAS THE ONLY LOTTERY NUMBER SO MANY OF US GOT FOR OUR SENIOR PROM TICKET IN THE 60'S AND 70'S TO GO TO A STRANGE AND FOREIGN COUNTRY, LEARN A STRANGE AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE , PEOPLE AND CULTURE AND LEARN HOW TO ERRADICATE IT--

I agree with you. I'll email both my senators tonight suggesting that change.

Back: I did.
