I'm joining the fresh/soph basketball team in my school, and I was wondering what kind of players a coach is looking for?

I haven't really played on a team before so i lack game experience and stamina. But i really want to make the team. I think I'm a sg, so can you guys give me some advice on what a good sg does?

Hey Byron N,

i think different coaches want different things. Some things that i think help though are:

1) Selflessness- too many players are in it for their own glory. Your coach is probably at an age where he's a little old-school and coaches esp. in high school teach a team concept- so i'd say first be a team player.

2) Be fundamentally sound. Little things such as boxing out, willingness to take a charge, and solid defense often gets overshadowed by scoring- but coaches watch everything and little things like that will get you noticed for the right reasons. i remember in one of my first games on the basketball team i was at the time 5'3 and less than 100 lbs and i took a charge from a guy that weighed at least 150 lbs and my coach was patting on my back and praising me after the game.

3) As a shooting guard- you need to be able to shoot. Work on having a accurate shot. A quick release. And i think as a guard you have to be a good free throw shooter- esp. as you will have the ball in your hands at the end of games if you play during crunch time.

4) Hustle, Hustle, Hustle,... Work harder than everyone else- during practice and possibly after.

5) A good shooting guard also can use his pump fake and get to the hoop. Remember if he gets fouled- he gets free throws (see #3).

Anyhow hope that helps. i played both pg, and sg when i was in High School- miss those fun playing days (yes even sometimes the practices). Good luck.

When I was in high school I was doing a report, so I asked my coach what coaches wanted to see.

1) Its a given that they want skill.
2) Player has good work ethic; works hard outside of practice; always gives 100%....ALWAYS
3) Leader on and off the court.
4) Good attitude
5) STAY OUT OF TROUBLE...as an underclassman, they'll drop u quick if you're a trouble maker (unless you're the next KING)

A shooting guard needs to be able to move well away from the ball. work on your stamina. Also have good D, b/c you'll be guarding some cold ballers.

Good Luck

You have to be a teamplayer. If you hog the ball, then forget it. You gotta be a teamplayer. SG is a tough position. Especially if you want to start. You gotta shoot good of course. Be quick. But a lot of people forget that SG isnt all about shooting. Its about driving it in, too. Always be positive and never get mad or scream at anyone. I am, too, joining an 8th grade team. What im telling you is what I have learned from like a week ago. So always be positive, teamwork, and if you wanna score a little or take over, shoot & drive it in.

Coaches want players with good attitudes and who aren't afraid to work and improve themselves. You might not be the best player on the team, but if you hustle every time you're in the game and at practices and put forth your best effort they will appreciate that more than you can realize.

You will also set a good example for the rest of the team.
