I believe that some people choose to be poor by doing nothing.
I believe that if they're at home all day sitting on their butts all day, when they're perfectly capable of working and earning an honest living they deserve nothing.
But more often than not, it's those people who get welfare and disability, and not the people who really need it.

Sometimes CHOISE has NOTHING TO DO WITH it... sometimes the opportunity does not arrise or the luck, or some big catastrophy (flood, hurricane, fire, or Serious medical condition) that MAKES someone be poor or CLOSE to it. Look at the elderly in this country today--- ONE ILLNESS can totally wipe out ALL their life savings in a matter of MONTHS.... Medications in the USA (especially for the elderly who take MANY) are OUTRAGEOUSLY... PRICED....often leaving the elderly without money for food... I'm considered POOR because I am sick, and on a fixed income but don't you DARE say I NEVER CONTRIBUTED ANYTHING..... I worked for 35 YEARS in State Government but once you retire, you lose a LOT of those benefits you worked so long to acquire....your insurance isn't as good and you end up paying out of pocket ---EMPTY POCKETS for much of your NEEDS.... You didn't want any explanation---well TOO BAD---you make EVERYONE who is poor sound like they are unabitious misfits and that just IS NOT TRUE!!! THINK before you talk next time and you wouldn't get the wrath of some little old retired sick woman.....

HAHAHA no.
Most of the time the poor are poor because they don't know how to be any other way. You'd be surprised at how much your starting off point in life can affect you.
There is also the superiority complex of the rich man you have to hurdle too. For example I once got a job as a residency secretary...I was the only one in my dept who wasn't a doctor. I was alone in a new city with no family, friends, or support trying to get an education and survive. I was often reprimanded for my clothes not being good enough or for not being "perky" enough (I was friendly but not "perky" whatever that is). I eventually got fired, had to work day labor, almost ended up on the streets.

I can't just say yes or no - it's not a black or white issue.
If someone is sincerely making an effort, they should have plenty of support. I think it's one of the biggest disgraces in America that we totally screw our working poor. And spare me the partisan BS - *both* sides are equally to blame.
But some idiot who wants to sit home and pop out kids like puppies? I think she needs to have her tubes tied. (I also think deadbeat dads should have that tattooed on their face.)
I don't care *who* you are - unless you're a vegetable, you can contribute *something*. Why should you and I work to support those who decide not to? Have them paint park benches. Pick up trash. Stuff envelopes. Plant flowers and trees. People need a reason to feel good about themselves - and a handout only leads to a sense of entitlement.
As a former spoiled rotten brat, trust me - just handing money to people does not help them. (I'm still spoiled - just not rotten.) I don't expect - or want - anyone else to pay my way...anymore. When my parents cut me off, I was furious - but it was, by far, the best thing they could have done for me. I developed a work ethic. I take pride in doing a good job, and my performance reviews reflect that. I *earn* my money.
I am also mean enough to think that welfare recipients should have to take drug tests, just like a lot of workers do. If they're an addict, they need help - not money.
For the record, I'm a conservative Libertarian. I don't really care if someone wants to waste their life on drugs - that's *their* choice. But I sure as hell don't want to pay for their habits.
Let the thumbs down begin!

America is a free nation where people make their choices and live with them. We have free will and anyone can pick themselves up and move forward if they choose too. The poor do not choose too will remain poor, but that does not mean they deserve nothing - it is true they pay nothing but the American "experiment" is a gracious one that contributes greatly to the poor. 1/2 of our society pays no income taxes at all because they are on the lowest end of the income scale. No other country can boast that.

Of course not. There are a lot of hard-working people who are poor, and they do contribute. Look at the immigration issue. They do contribute, but cannot command a wage because of their status. Most choose their destiny, but "contribute nothing" is too extreme.

The poor DO NOT choose to be poor...based on my societal research at Boise State University, the U.S. government creates a poor sector in our society; this is done so the poor become hungry and desperate, then, they will have to accept low paying jobs with no benefits; this becomes a labor pool designed by government and big business, then, profits are higher, with low wages and no benefits. This is why the U.S. maintains a certain percentage of unemployed; it's about corporate greed, and institutionalized slavery today in the U.S.A.

There are those that are lazy, and there are those who are victims of this greedy world we live in where the middle class is disappearing and the gap between the rich and the poor are getting bigger.
It cannot always be a yes or no answer to express yourself fully.

Anyone can get a job. Are we talking about homeless poor? or just poor because they dont make enough at their job?
Homeless poor dont deserve anything (go to a temp ag. get a job and get back on your feet) nothing should be handed to them.
Now for poor people living off of hud and foodstamps. Sometimes you just dont make enough money. Its your fault regardless of how you look at it. All you had to do was graduate and further your education to get a better job. But atleast there trying.

No.
Everyone is equal in every way. Everyone deserves everything they want out of live. Some people can't help that they haven't had the best of luck. But we as a society should be willing to give them that luck.
