You can look at this situation from both sides. Drug use is not going anywhere it is illegal at the time therefore it is a drain on the economy. We have to hire more police, build more jails and support these jails and the inmates in them during their incarceration, disease, health, etc, If we legalized drugs and put the government in control of the access then we could charge taxes on drugs, monitor who got what and how much of what etc. We are never going to eradicate drugs from the face of the earth so why not take a bad situation and make something good out of it,. If we can do it with cigarettes and liquor why not drugs?

marijuana should be decriminalized for home use by adults. Obviously, driving "stoned" would still be illegal. I'm not sure about "powder" drugs, but I do know that they are far more dangerous to people and society than marijuana is. If marijuana was taxed and sold, the government would make money and funds spent on keeping it illegal could be spent on other things. The "drug war" is a failure. When any kid you know knows where to find drugs, it's obviously a failure, and it's been going on for a long, long time. Too long. Drug use should be a public health issue, not a criminal justice issue.

No just because a drug is legal doesn't mean its use is going to increase. The U.S. government could legalize drugs tax the living crap out of it and use the money for education including the education of the dangers of drugs. You can make the argument that people are going to do drugs then get in a car and go off and kill someone. But people can do drugs when they're illegal and go off and kill someone. People should have the right to ingest whatever they like even if it does kill them. And as a disclaimer I don't use any drugs except for the ones prescribed to me by my doctor.

ask the thousands of foster children in America today who have had their very livelihood destroyed because of drugs use and abuse. I have 2 babies right now in my home a 3 month old and a 23 month old who deserve to be with mommy, but mommy is addicted to Meth! When I got those babies I treated runny meth sores for days. I think if you ask them they would say YES! and I am pretty sure the thousands of other children just like them would also agree!

Prohibition is proven not to work. The collateral damage caused by it will always be far worse the than drug itself.

Opium and cocaine used to be legal in this country. It was in Coca Cola and Dr Feel Good remedies and who knows what else. The reason it became illegal is because it was addictive and disruptive to people's lives. Why would we turn around and make it legal now?

Most drugs yes, however, I would give some consideration to legal use of weed.

if you mean that what is currently illegal, stay illegal, yes. they are illegal for a reason. not some prudish nor self - righteous backing. for practical reasons such as prone to accidents or violence. marijuana screws with the memory. when i first used to research it, that was not known. in some, it causes paranoia.

Drunk drivers kill close to 10,000 people a year on the roads (or something like that), and God forbid we dump a "high and stoned" driving nation on to the roads to go with the alcoholics.
