Shock absorbers for a Chevrolet 4X4?

Question

I have a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4 (Z71 package) in need of new shock absorbers. I was wondering if I should stick with the OEM absorbers (which I've heard are actually pretty good) or go with an upgrade. I don't 4x a whole lot nor do I have a lift kit or bigger tires. But I do like quality items and I don't mind investing in my truck a little. So any reccomendations that won't drain my wallet completely?

you can go back with stock ones on this or upgrade to a Monroe shock or a Gabriel shock either one,both are good,the original delco shocks was the best riding ones though for that truck,i made the mistake of getting a heavy duty shock for my tuck,and it destroyed the ride of it,i went with a Monroe heavy duty,and I'm thinking about going back to the original delco ,they ride good and it handled good,you got a choice on this one,but the originals ride better than the after market ones do,the cost is about the same either way on them,the only difference is the way they ride and handle,good luck on it.

The stock shocks are not bad, though they are pretty expensive. Monroe gas charged shocks are pretty good, so are KYB shocks, though the KYBs tend to yield a stiffer ride than the Monroes or OEM shocks, I like that, some people don't. You'd be hard pressed to go wrong with any name brand gas charged shock though. I don't like non-gas charged shocks, they don't have any real advantage, except being cheaper, and they don't work as well under heavy use. Adding a gas charge pressurizes the fluid, increasing the boiling point of the hydraulic fluid. When shock oil boils, it foams up and basically stops working altogether, and a washboard road will make unpressurized shocks foam up.

If you go on-line to autopartswarehouse.com you'll find KYB shocks which would be an upgrade. Bilstein, Carrara and Koni would join that list. Monroe Reflex would ordinarily be there but probably woulden't be any better than OEM replacements.
Please check your rear disc brake pads. For some strange reason the rears wear faster than the fronts.

The stock shock absorbers would be fine for normal driving. But... I would narrow it down to two upgrade options. Either the new Edlebrock shocks or the NEW RS9000's. I have both of them on each of my trucks. The RS9000's are perfect for ANY kind of off-roading or on-roading. The Edelbrock's are excellent too, but are a little more comfortable on the road.
