It depends what the question is.

To find y:-
2y = 4 - x
y = 2 - (1/2) x

To find x:-
x = 4 - 2y

2y +x = 4 is what we call a linear equation , solution to this is to graph it. to do this we may use sustitution, substitute any value for x and find the value of y.
x -2 0 2 4
y 3 2 1 0
then plot all these points using cartesian plane and connect all points.( notice that you will have a straight line) . no multiplying exponents .

Value of x:
2y + x = 4
x = 4 - 2y

Value of y:
2y = 4 - x
y = 2 - 1/2x

2y + y = 4
group like terms
3 y = 4
isolate y
3y/3= 4/3
y =4/3= 1 1/3= 1.3333333

what you want to do first is get x all by itself. in order to do that you have to subtract the 2y and bring it over to the other side. As you can see the 2y's cancel each other out.

2y+x=4
-2y =4-2y
__________
x=4-2y
