He killed his most capable military officers out of fear of a coup. That is one reason the Germans were so successful at the beginning of operation barbarossa. He signed a non agression pact with Hitler so he could take part of Poland. He sent millions to the gulags or to their execution after show trials. Stalin was Time magazin man of the year twice. Hitler was man of the year once. Franklin Roosevelt liked him and called him uncle joe. Truman was slow catching on to the soviet threat. However, Roosevelt recognized that stopping Hitler was necessary and possible. His ambassador to Great Britain, Joseph Kennedy had said that democracy was finished in europe. Kennedy was recalled and later proved wrong. The republicans of that day were for staying out of WW2.

Stalin was a small fry member of the Russian revolution who rose in the politbureau to a place where he finally grabbed power. His method was to disgrace those leaders who were ahead of him and finally killing them off.
