For the same reason there was a decline in religion afther the black death in the mid 1300's
At that time, EVERYONE ON EARTH had watched someone close to them die an agonizing death. The level of suffering cannot be imagined. Everything from art, to music, to literature, to science started to change from that one stone plunged into a still pool.
Now, WWI? Well, this was a war in which the technology for killing out surpassed the technology and tactics for not getting killed. The Airplane, the submarine, the maching gun, the sub-machine gun, poison gas, all came to bear in this miserable WORLD conflict. The size and scope of which had never been seen before - and what's more? Moving images to bring to the folks at home.
How could there be a God that would let such killing go on? many people wondered. Like the black Death, it was a world-wide sweeping crisis of survival and of faith. Over night music, art, the way of doing things changed.

Since I'm some what doubtful about this claim, I can think of plenty of modern religious sects that owe their foundation to this time period, I'll go with the most obvious answer. The Communist revolution in Russia, resulted in a government openly at war with the Eastern Orthodox religion and many who were formerly forced to be Christians were now forced to not be Christian.

Religion has been the reason for most wars, tragedies and sufferings of humanity just because every one wishes the other human being to follow his God.

After people suffered through that they realized the idea of an all powerful benevolent God was just plain stupid. Except in the US where most people still believe in that nonsense.
