The universe seemed to get along for a few billion years before and without any type of human 'awareness'. Its important to us, but in the grand scheme of things....
Awareness though, is crucial for achieving and maintaining the relief of suffering.

Awareness is an important factor because it allows us to grow as a species. Our observations of the physical world around us rule our lives and make us pinpoint the flaws and how we can improve them to enhance our lives. Awareness of social issues is also import for us to live peacefully with each other. If you are not aware, you may as well be dead. Actually, animals have senses a lot more attuned to the natural environment but I think the presence of all the different kinds of species balances out the ecosystem.

Awareness is often misunderstood. The ancients pictured their seers with wide dilated eyes. Which is where the term "eye opener" comes from. Awareness is seeing, whatever it is you are observing, from a state of neutrality (without judgment). If we did not want to achieve awareness of the universe, would it exist? Or would the world still be flat?

Awareness of our true self and of the Absolute truth is important. But the rest is not so important. IF we are aware of our true identity and eternal relationship with the creator (also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, Rama, etc.) Then He will make us aware of what is necessary to be aware of in all other situations. Without awareness we wouldn't have figured out how to use fire for warmth and cooking or that logs floated in water and now we have boats and learned how to recreate the sounds of nature and now we have symphonies......should I go on? It is a vitaly important factor.
