We aren't a Democratic Republic. We are a Representative Republic and we don't rule by polls!
I am in agreement with you that the people sent Bush a clear message last year, and he and the Republicans, just ignore it!
If you are for the troops, then bring them home!
The majority of the troops are against the war and over 50% say we should have never gone according to an Army Times poll of ACTIVE DUTY military!
And to the one above, if you think everyone else is so dumb and you are so smart, have you yet to learn that the military is controlled by Civilians. They don't tell us what they want to do!!!
The Dems hold the Senate by one vote, and do not have the 2/3 majority they need to overide a Bush Veto! It is you Republicans who are holding up the works, not Democrat's! You had 12 years and the Dems 7 months! Why are you standing in the way of change?
And to the one above who wanted to see the poll! You lost both the House and the Senate. Isn't that enough of a poll for you?

Democratic Republic means we have the right and responsibility to choose who we want to run the country. This is why we vote for presidential candidates, otherwise we would be able to keep the same president for more than two terms. Democratic Republic does not mean that just because the majority of the country wants something we are going to get whatever that may be. I am not sure but I would not be surprised if a majority of this country already wants our troops home, just ask any Ron Paul supporter. The fact is though that it would be worst to pull troops out now than to keep them there. I feel we should make a timetable to get out of Iraq but I do not agree with people that we need to get out now. As Giuliani stated, we do not want to be in Iraq but its not something we can just runaway from. Nobody wants this war to keep going on but its the people who run this country that get to decide what happens across seas.

I think there is a bit more to consider here. I have no doubt the overwhelming majority of Americans want our men and women home. But I also think the majority of Americans want, and realize the importance of coming home only after a victory has been achieved.
The argument of weather we should be there or not will rage over the ages but the simple fact remains that we ARE there, so the real question now is , "how best to achieve our goals as quickly and efficiently as possible?"
I think we owe it our troops to support them publicly but continue to debate ideas privately......We as a country are at our very finest when we truly are The "UNITED" States of America. God-Bless our troops and God-Bless the United States.

That would be nice. Look, I found this piece of crap website that is right under our nose!
http://www.news.faithfreedom.org/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=599
With great aplomb they will refer to the Qur’anic verses (such as 2:30, 6:165, 7:129, 27:62) which firmly declare that only the Muslims are the rightful inheritors of earth. Allah has assured the victory of Islam by expropriating and usurping the land of the infidels and hand them over to the Muslims (verses 13:41, 21:44, 28:58). The Islamic world is patiently waiting for this ultimate victory of Islam—no infidel should bear any doubt on this mindset of great majority of Islamic diehards.
There are thousands of Islamic organizations in the West whose job is to keep pushing their Islamic agenda to reshape the West. The message is loud and clear: conform to Islam or else face jihad, that is, Islamist terrorism.
I'm wondering if this war will be lifelong.

I don't think we should ever allow ourselves to lose a winnable war. EVER!! We did the right thing. Congress passed the Iraq Liberation act 360-38 and the Authorization for use of military force 518-13 I think the majority already spoke.

What if the majority of American troops believe in what they are doing and don't *want* to come home?
And I really don't *care* what the general public thinks. Most Americans are too busy stuffing their faces with crap and watching the latest "news" about Britney or Paris. They have *no* idea about national affairs, let alone world affairs. Bitchy? Probably. But freedom comes with a hell of a lot of responsibility - and we seem to be proving unworthy of it.

Should we have withdrawn from WW2 when that got unpopular??? If we did, it would be called Nazi Europe right now.
You cant always go by public opinion because people are fickle and easily swayed by voices of dissent and the media. Sometimes war is the only way to correct an injustice.

What if the majority of Americans want to win the lottery! Our country and President's purpose is to protect us, even if it is against the will of an uninformed mob.

No. The majority of Americans are clueless and as this is a representative republic we have already selected our leaders and if they go against our will will have an opportunity to replace them.........

We are a republic not a democracy, we vote for people to do what we think is right.
There vote is what they personally feel. we have no recourse if it's not what we believe.
