My husband just bought a book for my son called "math doesn't suck!" You should check it out.

half a centimeter plus half centimeter + whole centimeter
half plus half equals whole.

1 half cm and 1 half cm = 1cm
not 1 half and 1 half = 1cm

If you're talking about 1/2 centimeters, than yes.

As far as I know, centimeters --or the metric system--do not come in fractions.

That's confusing, is that what the question says word for word?
1 half + 1 half = 1 whole.... but if you dunno what they're using to measure 1 half, then.... I dunno.
