A quick search in Google suggests that that is a book from Jodo Shu, the Pure Land school, which is a mainstream sect in Japan. Nothing to worry about, and these guys make their money from charging arms and legs for funeral services.

Update: Here's a link to the book on Amazon (and it's nothing to do with Soka Gakkai)

Like Ken says the book is Jodo Shinshu which is about as cult-like as the Methodists. Soka Gakkai is based on Nichiren so they are ulikely to promote a book based on the teachings of Shinran.

Buddhism is not a cult. But then again, I do not know exactly who your friend is hanging out with.
Buddhism teaches one to question & not accept anything (ideas) blindly. It also emphasize on 'letting go', be mindful of those around you, and in some ways, care for nature, among many others.
If your friend is into a legitimate group, you have nothing to worry about. I think its best that you find out more about what your friend is up to, there are cults, in Japan, which uses buddhism as a facet.
