To my dearest and beloved Brigitte,
The battle has been over for several days now and the suffering is beyond all sense of measure. The stench of corpses lying in the fields awaiting a decent Christian burial offends the nostrils. I doubt I shall ever completely wash away this horrible smell nor the scenes that now fill my eye.
In the confusion of battle, I became separated from my unit. I've since joined company with a few others, like me who are lost and searching. The rumors here run as wild as the wind. Some say Mr. Lincoln is coming to see for himself the waste and carnage.
Last evening, I and the others had hoped to seek refuge in a nearby barn. When we threw back the doors, the sight that greeted us was morbid beyond all compare. So much misery. It is hard to imagine that I could possibly take part in such an event.
I pray that when the good Lord sees fit, we shall rejoin in song and laughter. I miss your sweet smell and smile. Lil lacs in full bloom could not be as sweet.
Humbly yours,
Doc.
