I don't have one. It is a used computer that was reworked or however you say it.
but when I used to reboot I would have to pick the system I wanted to use. xp or 98. I never picked 98. I have my daughter and her boyfrreind staying there and no telling what was done to it.

Find the CD that's supposed to be on it. If you reuse an XP CD and key code, Micreosoft knows about it and it will not validate the installation.

1. Windows is a FAT32 drive Format
2. Windows XP is an NTSF drive format
Windiws 98 will not recognize NTSF
Windows XP will recognize FAT32.

Boot the XP disk and choose repair (R)
at command choose c: drive press enter
at next command type fixmbr and press enter
then type fixboot and press enter
then type exit and the computer should reboot, be sure to remove the cd before it boots up.

Generally this will at least get windows XP to boot up. Unfortunately this will not leave you with a dual boot system any more.

Most likely causes are either the bootloader has been corrupted (eg. by a virus) or the hard drive has failed.

If it's a corrupted bootloader, it can usually be restored with TestDisk, which can be found in the Knoppix STD Linux Distribution.

But if you have a recovery/system restore CD, you'd probably be better off booting from that and going from there. Though using a system restore CD to return to the factory state will, in almost all cases, wipe out anything on the drive, that's if the drive is still functioning and accessible.

When booting up try hitting the F8 key and see if you can get into windows boot options, find something that says repair or system recovery or system restore something like this may help, they may have accidently deleted the os but as usually the recovery partition can be touch if so then they must have done something bad,

can you get into bios or cmos and see if you boot options may have been changed to something else besides the harddrive

check your connections inside the computer to see if thety are connected and connected right if so, go ahead and unplugg them and plugg them back in, possibility some could have come loose inside
