You may have a bad MBR or you could have a hard drive failure.

But you probably have a Trojan Replicator. It multiplies and multiplies until it takes up massive amounts of Hard Drive space. To fix this, download Avast Antivirus (http://www.avast.com) its free for life. And let it restart and scan your computer after install.
Also download Ad-Aware it will help out greatly

As for the MBR google Fix a Bad MBR (Your OS NAME)

IF it is the hard drive, you will need to get a new one, probably IDE (if you have the old interface) or prefirably SATA

Have you check the setting and limit of the temporary internet files?

To do that, go to Control Panel and Internet Option. Go to the section depending what operation system you are using. Click on the part that show the limit and delete the files.

Check your MsConfig or Task Manager for any running programs. You might want to scan using the antivirust but that about it.

What operating system? It sounds like it could be your page file (a file windows uses as "virtual" memory to speed things up....)You can change what size this file is by right clicking on my computer, going to properties, it will bring up a new window. in XP pick the advanced tab, perfomance, settings...its at the bottom. Unless harddrive space is an issue and your check clean for viruses I wouldn't say its a problem at all, just XP being XP
