Get a brown grocery sack and cut down one of the seams and across the bottom until it lies flat. Set your book on top of it, with the book open (and any grocery-sack writings facing up, so they'll be on the inside). Take a pencil and draw all around its outline, leaving about three inches on all sides. Cut that out and set the book on it again (with the pages facing up, and the spine in the middle of the cover). Now, cut a "V" shape out of the two front corners of the paper (with the point of the "V"s meeting the points of the corners). Don't do the back yet. Cut straight down at the edge of the spine on the top and bottom too, to make flaps. Then, fold in all three flaps and tape them together.
You do the same thing for the back cover, except you don't want it as tight because you might not be able to close the book. When you tape those flaps in place, close the book a little to make sure it will bend. Then, write your book's subject in large letters so you don't grab the wrong one for the wrong class, and you have a book cover that you can doodle on when you're bored.

If you mean this: use any type of paper you can think of or sturdy enough to cover and protect the book...the brown paper is very sturdy, you can use the gift wrapping papers, too, either one of the sides...go to an arts and crafts store or stores like office depot, they have many types of paper there.

Do you mean a protective cover for an existing book?
Dollar stores sell sticky plastic for covering books.

For your own work, like something you print off the computer, I recommend this. I went to Kinko's to have my book bound. I laminated the two cover pages, and then had the whole thing bound. It costs about five bucks, if you include the laminating.
