I'm talking songs that were made popular in one genre, and later covered by an entirely differently extreme genre...

Tori doing "Teen Spirit" is a good call!!

My immediate thought - Marilyn Manson covering Nina Simone's "I Put A Spell On You."

Creepy. I don't know if it was either good or bad. It just....was.

ETA: I've always loved the Sisters of Mercy covering "Gimme Shelter." It's just so dark, I love it!

Or Cake, covering Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" - actually this is one of my favorites. It goes from being the "newly single woman's survival anthem" to just PURE SARCASM. Brilliant.

Pat Boone made an album of metal songs called In A Metal Mood and it's, well different! Kind of funny! There is another not so well known band called The Coolies who made an album and all of the songs are covers of Simon & Garfunkle songs! It's really good. I think it's called Dig?

Burton Cummings' lounge-lizard version of BTO's "You Aint Seen Nothin Yet"
The Punk Rock Turns 50 suite on an album called Pretentious Crapola by the Swinging Erudites
Love Is All Around by Joan Jett (the theme to the Mary Tyler Moore Show)--although admittedly I'm not sure that one's all that ironic

(and yeah, they all sounded pretty damn funny)

It would have to be that Nouvelle Vague version of Dancing With Myself. Funny? Yes. Good? It sort of sneaks up on you after a while.

Type O Negative covering Seals and Crofts - Summer Breeze. A sappy AM radio staple suddenly became very menacing. But also very good.

BuzzKill - Rev Co outshined Rod in a major way. They were meant to do that song!

Rusty Cage by Soundgarden, covered by Johnny Cash

Suzie Q when covered by Creedence Clearwater Revival was pretty radical for the time.

Take me to the River, a traditional gospel tune done by the Talking Heads.

Oh and they aren't ironic, but I find myself addicted to Johnny Cash standards covered punk bands. Pretty much any rockabilly sounds good done by a punk band.

Six Feet Under covering Smoke on the Water.. It was a pretty extreme change..
Throwdown's version of Baby Got Back pretty much takes the cake for funny in my book.

Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's Hurt really struck me as both beautiful and bizarre. When you listen to Hurt on The Downward Spiral, it almost feels like a suicide note. Reznor's nihilistic approach to the song is full of venom, dispair and rage.
I was surprised that Rick Ruben chose the song for Cash to cover (I'm assuming Cash wasn't aquainted with NIN) because of Cash's strong religious beliefs.
The finished product though was a work of art. His version seemed like a sad goodbye to his wife, his fans and his art... in a form that was simple and heartbreaking.
