As someone already stated, period pain x10... When I was pregnant, my friend was due after me. She asked me the same question. I said the same thing. Take your worst period pain, and it's alot worse. But, you can get thru it. You'll go thru braxton hicks, and have "contractions" before you get to the real thing. They may/may not hurt alot, but, the actual birthing contractions... you'll know.
At the actual birth, there may be some pain between contractions, during the earlier contractions, you'll have more time between the contractions, and you'll be able to relax more in between. If you did lamaze, just remember to breathe.
Everyone's experience is similar, everyones is different. Sure it is hard to understand until you've gone thru it. But, depending on how you plan to give birth, with/without medication... etc.. is how you'll need to work your way thru it.
BIGGEST THING..... RELAX... that is the best thing to do..

Just trust me. You will know when labor and contractions start. Good Luck. Don't be to worried about that right now. Between my contractions I still felt uncomfortable but not really hurting. During contractions, it hurt like h*** I don't think you stomach stays hard except for the pregnancy part. When you have contractions it gets harder. Contractions don't really hurt at first, but they do feel uncomfortable. The closer together they are the more they hurt like h***. Good Luck

Contractions can begin as a dull lower back ache. They then begin to feel like your stomach is cramping. If you have ever had cramps with your periods...they feel sort of like that. They wax and wane...it does not hurt in between. Your stomach feels like it is "hard" or tightening while the contraction is going on. They really don't "hurt" so much at first, as just feel uncomfortable. Believe me, there will no mistaking when you go into labor. Believe it or not, you will know.

trust me...you will know them when you feel them!
is there still pain between contractions?
There can be. It depends on how close together your contractions are and whether or not you have "back labor"
does your stomach always feel "hard"?
Yes. When you feel a contraction, you are feeling your uterus flex which makes the muscle feel hard.
do contractions always hurt at first?
In my personal experience, yes.

I had back labor (for 3 days before delivery) so maybe my experience is different, but...
... for me, contractions were sort of like really bad period cramps in that they came and went and it wasn't a constant ache. As I actually moved through the stages of early labor, they became sort of "pinchy." It was like back spasms just in the lower part of my body and down my hips. Hurt so bad at times it dropped me to the floor. There was no relief for it either. I'd walk, they'd keep striking. I'd sit, and again I'd have myself saying "Ooch ooch ooch." No "ouch." It hurt too bad for an "ouch." It was definitely an "ooch."
And believe it or not, it isn't as bad as it sounds.

They start off milder and they are not constant. They come and they go. Gradually to build momentum and strength. Hopefully you are taking the needle if not you need special training I would imagine to deal with the pain. While contracting your stomach will get hard. You will know you are going to give birth trust me its one thing you cannot miss. Good luck!

Don't worry you'll KNOW when you are in real labor. If you are in doubt stay home. This is obviously your first baby and first babies don't usually come quickly. When it's time you'll KNOW!
