When my mother was dying, she told me, "You have got to stop being a martyr!"... I understand that it means "one who sacrifices themselves for others".
I find that I sometimes focus so much on doing for others, that I neglect ME....which I know is not healthy.

She meant stop letting people abuse you. There is a difference between someone who endures abuse in silence to placate an abuser and someone who sacrifices themselves as a last resort to help others.

no. theres not too many people that are martyrs in fact if any at all. even those who seem to be the biggest are doing everything subconciuosly for themselves because anytime u help someone it usually is more to benefit urself and to say i did a good deed then to benefit the other

Is it affecting your life? Your marriage? Your relationship with your kids? Your family? Martyrs will die for their beliefs-we are gonna die with or without beliefs, check and see if you say yes too much. And learn to say no and not feel guilty. It is your life, all the people you help won't be in the coffin with you. Besides the more you do for others the less they have to do for themselves.

No I'm not and I refuse to be. For me it is a poor attempt for attention. Nothing to do with the service of others.
