bartman is not hated in chicago. the dude just caught a bad break. he paid hundreds of dollars to get that seat and unfortunately got in the way of a ball moises alou could have caught. remember the cubs went on to lose another game that series and got knocked out. the cubs could have still got that same batter out, but they let him get on base and eventually score to give up the go ahead run. dusty baker left mark prior in that game for way too long and he was horrible in the 8th.
hell, mr cub, ronnie santo even said, that cubs fans shouldn't blame steve bartman. infact, if the cubs had made the WS, santo was supposed to throw out the first pitch. ronnie said if the cubs made it, he was going to bring steve bartman out to throw the pitch with him. forgive and forget people!!! the cubs will have their moment one day. and when that day happens, bartman, the goat, all of that will be forgotten.

I think that's a moot point, Bartman is probably more DISLIKED (ehhhh...remember how strong of a word hate can be), because Chicago being a much larger city than Baltimore probably has more Cubs fans (all though the Orioles do still have a lot of fans from the DC area). I also think that the umpire Richie Garcia held a lot of responsibility for that "homerun" call that wasn't. I didn't like the way this kid was praised in NY for catching the ball over the wall. But it's a moot point by now.
I realize that I may be in the minority on saying this, but while both fans interfered with the outcomes of the games. The Orioles still had a chance to overcome an obsticle and go to the world series,
I realize the letdown that they had, but they did still lose in the other games where there was no fan intereference. The Orioles also had their chance to go to the world series next season after winning the division outright wire-to-wire. They came up short to Cleveland in the ALCS.
The Cubs still had a chance to overcome their obsticle and go to the world series, they didn't. I don't think these people like Bartman, Garcia, or Maier should get all of the blame in these situations. I just think these situations are both a moot point by now.
Also I accept the Ravens 2000 season as some form of revenge on NY as a Baltimore sports fans. The Jets lost to the Ravens in the regular season, the Ravens where on the winning side against the Giants of one of the biggest superbowl blowouts in recent superbowl history, 34-7.
Redfortribe, I disagree, to say that the Orioles would have lost the series regardless of the Maier catch is heresay. I don't HATE Maier, I'm not a big fan of his, but none-the-less the fact is that he interfered in a game and is partially responsible for influencing the score of the game.
Maier didn't completely KILL the hopes of the Orioles IMO, because that was not the final game of the series, if my memory serves me correctly that was only game two. The Orioles season ended in Baltimore.

Steve Bartman. The Orioles would have most likely lost the series anyways and it was in NY. Maier was also(at the time)just a kid so you couldn't really hate him.

Bartman, even though he didn't really do anything wrong, plus the Cubs had about 30 chances 2 win that game.
Maier should be hated more, cause he reached over 4 the homer, it wasn't in the stands. Altough, as a Yankee fan, I don't really care that Maier cheated in 96

Bartman is hated much more. He cost the HOME team the victory -- Maier helped the home team win the game.

Neither should be hated. I guess Bartman since people think that he contributed to the Cubs inability of winning a World Series since 1908. However, people should lay off of Bartman. That right there is proof of how stupid people can be. The last time I checked, baseball games are won on the field. So lay off Bartman already!!!!

Bartman with ease. I was just at Wrigley the other night and it seems like every time a foul ball is hit that way Bartman is screamed. It was actually quite comical. Another thing on why it is Bartman go to a Cubs game and you will understand.
