The "Explanatory Supplement to the Astronomical Almanac" is a great reference book, but it was last published in 1992. When will the next revision be out?

The 2005/2006 version is just a softcover reprint of the 1992 version. It's not the rewrite that I'm hoping for.

No time to ask friends at USNO. But -- as a reference book it has been rewritten about once a generation with no attempts to keep it absolutely current. It was written over a period of about a decade and was batted back and forth to make it completely correct and clear. I haven't heard that they are considering a new version at this point. It would be my guess that there might never be another hard-copy of the Supplement, since most users/readers have access to the internet. I'm guessing that they will begin to think about an internet-based Explanatory Supplement.

If you have thoughts on any of this, contact the folks at USNO (see below). I bet they'd like to hear from a user.

PS I am an old-timer, who prefers the edition from the 1960's!!
