How do you know which function to use to calculate the function value for a particular x, when a function is defined piecewise with two or more definitions??

Each piece should be good only for a given range of X values, and the ranges should not overlap.

Just backup to the reason why you have piecewise functions. They exist because there are two domains in which there is a function, and the function in one domain may be different from that in the other domain. So check your domains against your particular-x to determine which function to select.

take the value as x and form 2or3 conditions with x according to the definitions and club those conditions to form the function in x and solve it.
