I personally feel that America will only become intensely patriotic if something along the lines of an act of terrorism that totally disrupts America again (like 9/11) occurs. I don't feel anybody will really care so much about the space race that they will take it to heart and forget their political differences. We are not fighting Russia for the moon/rocket/satellites/et cetera (just an example) and therefore we are only "fighting" ourselves. If we have a major cause, then this would become a Country wide effort. A major cause would be fighting terrorism, or cleaning up a natural disaster. No one will really be directly effected with our space race as opposed to America in a disaster.

You are like most and look to the government to get the answer. That is the largest reason so many thing it is so bad.
It is you and all of those that live in the USA that have to start thinking and doing. Every generation has the same thinking and that is that it was so much better before. I have lived a long time already and remember the 40s very well but not before that. I also know how hard my parents worked to provide for me and my sobs. That is when people needed each other to survive. This need is what held communities together and held the nation together. The much smaller population then was another help. Plenty of room for people and plenty of resources to keep them in comfort.
People are less apt to know their neighbors today. Most have much more than they should have when young and expect even more when adults. Too much separation of different groups of people today. The attitude that people should keep their culture when moving to another land is totally wrong and will divide a nation.
I could go on and on and actually I do not know the real answer to what should and has to be done. I remember the older folk saying much the same abut my generation and the two that followed me.
I do believe that over population of this earth is Much more of a problem than anyone wants to admit.

I am 17, and mostly the people I see who say "America sucks!" and stuff like that are people who always think the grass is greener on the other side.
For example, a lot of high schoolers I know say "our high school sucks!" But in reality, my high school is very richly funded with great teachers/education and very little violence (no knives or even fist fights, few shoving in the hallways...the biggest nuisance is probably the loud jerks who stroll into the library yelling!) They complain about cliques but honestly, our school's cliques aren't severe like movie cliques and most likely every other American high school has the same situation or worse regarding cliques. If the people who complained about my school moved to another public high school, they will probably want to come back to ours.
In the same vein, the people who I see complaining about America are people who don't really know other countries. Okay, you spent a wonderful weekend in Cancun or a week in Paris - but chances are, if you were living in Cancun or Paris, you'd have plenty of complaints about those areas. If I sent every person who complained about the way America is to live for ten years in a random city in the world (assuming that language/money/friends/etc. weren't a problem), more than 75% would be unhappy with their new location.
I do however see how changes could be made to America. In fact, striving for the ideal is THE MOST American way of thinking. Striving to do better, and to overthrow what isn't working is exactly what the founding forefathers did during the Revolutionary War against Britain. This is how America was born! If Americans are not satisfied, to make that known and to start changing things is the true American thing to do. Supporting "America" blindly without letting your voice be known is un-American, in my opinion. America is a democracy where the citizens have the power to get what they want. If we just had one person telling us how America should be, that would just make America a monarchy...and America under a dictatorship is decidedly NOT American (as I see it. I totally respect your view though if you disagree with me.)
I think maybe to get more meaningful answers, you should tell us what you think "intense patriotic nature" means. Does this mean having the American flag on every porch? Or have citizens that support the President's every decision? Is someone who sings the national anthem every day patriotic? Or someone who respects democracy, and live by the law? Maybe patriotism means thinking that America is better than all other countries. Maybe patriotism is thinking that America should change all other countries to be more like America. Or maybe patriotism is being proud of America and its heritage, without forcing America's ways onto other countries (because after all, the colonies broke off from Britain so it wouldn't be forced to be something it's not.)
In my opinion being American means respecting people for all their differences, regardless of race, religion, gender, political view, taste in pastries, etc. So the open-minded, respectful person is a patriotic person. That's just in my mind, thinking of the phrase "all men are created equal." I believe that this phrase from the Declaration of Independence was the foundation of Democracy in America. And to me, our democratic nation makes America the America it is today.
So in my opinion, it would be innaccurate to say there has ever been an "intense patriotic nature" more than what we have today. Although everyone still holds prejudices, I think we Americans are more open-minded today than we ever were, and I think we will only continue to embrace people of all differences.

Americans were NEVER so patriotic or peaceful - the was of 1776 was one where America threatened by bloody means to separate itself into northern and southern parts based on ideology and politics!
What on God's green earth makes you think otherwise?
Hell's bells, just read some American history - America was FOUNDED on disruption and dissent, the hatred for the king of England or any other royalty or leadership - Americans seem hell-bent on disobedience to anyone but themselves, back then and even today!

Im think we need to encourage more patriotic holidays like 4th of July. You know theres never a big deal about veteran and memorial? People just take days off, and its not fair.
Also we need more flag things, because I dont think its fair that Jamaicans and Haitians and Puerto Ricans and all other immigrants put up their flags in their cars in the USA but yet how many people you see around here with American flags in their cars or in their keychains?? No one, thats what the problem is, no one is encouraged to be a good citizen, even in the army people are using the army to get benefits not because they care about this money, young people are being encouraged more to vote and thus dont care. Thats the problem, no one shows love for America, we just treat it as if were here and wave every other third world poor country that we come from but not our own? I mean how come immigrants dont wave the US Flag?
To me its all about Pride, and the thing is no one has it anymore, we need to reinforce what that flag meant, we need to reinforce American Pride, we need more flags being put up (and not because of September 11th) in stores. Its like 4th of july is the only time we see American pride.
To answer your question, we need to reinforce pride, and, no disrespect, but I dont think people should be allowed to wave other countries flags, especially if they left their poor country to come here.

i might like to be "up above" gazing all of it! lol! God is removing his hand from u . s .. The president has even reported that u . s . isn't a Christian united states (yet we constantly have been...what got here approximately??). seem in any respect that's been occurring to u . s . the previous couple of years, considering unbelievers have been combating to eliminate God from each little thing? it is purely going to worsen too, quickly purely pointing out God would be seen Hate Speech. yet, the Bible reported this might take place so there is not any surprises, purely unhappiness.....

Not until Armageddon when all the hatemongers are destroyed, along with murderers, rapists, dummies, etc., but it won't just be America, it will be all the world. Until that 90% of riff raff is destroyed at Armageddon, the remaining 10% of truly decent human beings won't stand a chance.
I can't wait. I hope I am among the 10%. Anything will be better than the way things are presently here in the old sick of US of A.

disaster, 9/11 happened and it united us for a while. We won't band together if everything is all fine and peachy. All americans would rather set on their lazy butts and piss and moan about how terrible their pathetic lives are and how it's the presidents fault. Americans are too self centered to be patriotic.

Removal of a global information network. There's too many viewpoints available for people to rally around a specific cause. Not a good idea though, it'd set us back decades.
