If this is a wild bunny, it is illegal for you to have it...inside the house or out. Please take it to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. You can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.htm

These people have the necessary state and federal licenses to keep sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. They also have the specialized training needed to prepare wild animals for successful reintroduction to the wild.

Cottontails usually become independent upon reaching four or five weeks of age after being nursed by their mother, so it would be able to survive on its own if you release it in an appropriate area that would not endanger it: no busy roads nearby, etc.

I'm no expert, and looked over a helpful site to find information. However, it may learn to depend on you for nourishment, so I think leaving it in the care of professionals would be best.

Virtually all *wild* bunnies survived being born in the wild.

You need to give your mother a membership in the House Rabbit Society. And tell her to stop dating Mr. McGregor, on orders of Peter.

If you have raised it from a baby, it will never be able to survive in the wild. It has learned to depend on you for everything in its life and won't know how to live on its own.

It would be kinder to have it euthanized than to turn it loose to starve or be terrorized and killed by a predator.
