The patterns can be more than one or two.
Excuse my english if you don't understand, ask and I will try to make it more fine...
Possible Succesions
Successions of multiples of 4. 1+4=5, 5+(4x2)=13, 5+(4x3)=17.
Potencies of 2. 1+2²=5, 5+2³=13, 13+16=29.
Prime potencies of 2. 1+2²=5, 5+2³=13, 13+128=141.
Multiples of 2 that aren't multiples of 3 and are bigger than 3. 1+4=5 5+8=13 13+10=23.
Numbers ("Enteros", I don't know how to say it in English, the ones that are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...) that are multiplied to itself (²) and later supplied the next number with the same form... I mind the serie is of the form A²+(A+1)², (A+1)²+(A+2)², (A+2)²+(A+3)², (A+3)²+(A+4)², with this case A=0. Sorry for my english, I can remember the word :P): 0²+1²=1, 1²+2²=5, 2²+3²=13, 3²+4²=25

this sequence adds 4 and then twice 4 to get from 1 to 5 to 13, so the next number would be 25 (13 plus 3 times 4), the next number would be 41 (or 25 plus 4 times 4) and so on and so on.

5-1=4
13-5=8
next number should be 12 apart from 13 so
13+12=25

both answers work
1+4=5, 5+8=13, but there is not enough information. the next phrase could well be 13+12 or 13+16 (found by adding 4 or by doubling, respectively) still i think its more likely to be 25

looks like the pattern is to multiply the term by 2 then add 3
2n + 3
so the next term is (2 x 13) + 3 = 29

One pattern might be to add multiply of 4's...
1 + 4 = 5
5 + 8 = 13
13 + 12 = 25
ect...
