With all due respects to jk a, Scrabble is a poor choice because Scrabble is about scoring with letter combinations that happen to be words. It has nothing to do with usage or context. There are expert Scrabble players who don't speak English! I wouldn't choose Taboo either because you're trying to *avoid* using certain words and that encourages lapses into the players' native tongue. May I suggest Password (or the long out of print Educational Password) by Milton Bradley. The game is all about word usage and context.

I would reccomend three games to teach English as a second language. Scrabble is excellent for teaching the building blocks of words. You've been Sentenced will teach sentence construction as it's entire premise is to take 10 random words you're given and construct a coherent, gramatically correct sentence. The third game i would use is Apples to Apples since it teaches you how to pick an appropriate adjective for a given noun. If you can build words, build sentences and combine adjectives and nouns you should be able to grasp the basics of english language, both spoken and written

I think the game Taboo would be good, they would have to describe an item without using 5 words that are listed this would help learn new words and meanings.
