Latitude is the horizontal lines on a map. Check out some of the nautical celebrations when ships cross the equator.
Longitude is the perpendicular lines on a map.
For latitude check out the Equator [0 (zero) latitude], the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer. For longitude check out Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) close to 0 (zero) longitude and also look at the Date Line in the Pacific Ocean. I am told ther term GMT has been replaced.

Laditude and longitude locate any position on the surface of the earch. Laditude is in the "up and down" direction. The equator is assigned 0 degrees, and laditude runs north for 90 degrees to the north pole and south for 90 degrees to the south pole. The difference in one degree of laditude is the circumference of the earth divided by 360 degrees or about 69 miles.

Longitude is the location of a point east or west of a vertical great circle reference. A great circle is a circle drawn with a diameter equal to that of a sphere. This reference is longitude zero or the meridian. Longitudes are counted for 180 west of the meridian and 180 degrees east of the meridian. Where these meet is what is called the "international date line" because any time just east of this line is one day ahead of a point just west of this line.

The distance between 1 degree of longitude is equal to that of laditude at the equator of the earth. However, since the circumference of a circle cutting a sphere at other degrees on laditude is less than the great circle, the longitude is smaller as you go further from the equator. If you were exactly at a pole, you could take one step south (or north) and traverse 360 degrees of longitude in just a few steps!

Lines of latitude run east/west. The main line of latitude is the Equator. All lines of latitude are parallel to each other.

Lines of longitude run north and South, but are not parallel. All lines of longitude meet at the two poles. The main line of longitude runs through Greenwich, England, and 180 degrees from Greenwich is the International Date Line.

In the early days of sailing, navigation only used lines of latitude for location purposes. They were not able to use lines of longitude because the early ships did not have accurate time pieces which are necessary for locating exact lines of longitude.
