If we had another major terrorist attack which required responding, there might be a call for a draft. I can't see the US getting into a war with another major power any time in the future, but there might be actions against Iran, NK or another smaller country.

Finally an intelligent question and one you will find that makes people's palms sweat. Every time I have brought it up I get about 2 answers.

The draft should be brought back. Why? Simple. It's immensely impopular because no one wants to go off and fight wars and die for stupid reasons. So our politicians and presidents would be awfully damned careful about starting one!! And people would not be so slaphappy to back anyone who did.Got it? Remember, nothing rallies the masses around a president like a war. Until Bush got HIS very own war, even his right to be president was being questioned. When he declared war, even the liberal press and the democrats were pushing each other to get in the photo op behind him! Politicians know that starting wars help get them elected and take people's minds off the real issues. Having a draft would cramp that!

People love feeling good about ¨supporting our troops¨as long as it's a professional mercenary army but you will see the numbers dwindle if it's their son, husband ,father, sister,or WORSE! themselves! going off to risk death or horrible mutilation to shore up some neocon politician's fantasy about a world policed by the U.S.

The Military (the Big Guys) want a draft like a hole in the head because they know that all their amusing little wars would come to an end. No wars, no big time military spending, no quick promotions(only in wartime do they get a chance to scramble up that career ladder!).

No,we won't get the draft back. Too bad. Having it might keep the next war from happening.

There's already a "backdoor draft" going on but so far, it's only for those already in the military. Many service members are doing multiple tours in Iraq, not being allowed to leave the military when their time is up, and there have been reports that people who have already been discharged being called back. I think the reasons the draft hasn't been re-instated are (1) it's a very unpopular idea and (2) women would have to start being drafted and that idea is even more unpopular.
