I owe them thousands, it really doesnt make sense. I should really owe them around 200. since i stopped paying in May2007, 49 dollars a month. how do i owe them THOUSANDS?

Without seeing your contract, and I am assuming you signed one, my guess would be that you obligated yourself to a long-term contract (12 months? 24 months?), and they want the entire amount.
It sounds like you need to read your membership contract. If you signed a 24 month contract, that could be $49 a month times not just the months you are behind, but all of the months left on the contract as well.
Long term contracts are how fitness clubs make their money. Read your contract to find out about early termination.
