What are the purposes for:
Adobe Flash Player
Adobe Shockwave player
Media Player
Quick Time Player
And are they all necessary to have? Seems like it takes up a lot of memory space.

in addition to those you also need to download following:
1.- VLC Player - FREE download at www.videolan.org - supports all codecs (including DVD so you can watch DVds on it) and all operating systems (Mac, Windows, Linux, BeOS, Palm)
2.- Real Player - FREE download at www.real.com - Real was the first player for audio/video broadcast on the internet so lots of online radio/tv stations broadcast in real ram format.
Real supports windows wma format, real ram format and dvd so you can watch yr DVDs on it
All those players that you mentioned above are ALL free - don't pay for any of those
Windows Media Player plays windows audio wma files (can't watch DVDs on it)
quick time by apple is used by professionals in video for everything and later converted to other formats - standard for video production
adobe's flash and shockwave is for web material (web pages) - flash is king of web
iTunes is big as music player and audio/video organizer - FREE download at apple.com/itunes - 70% of all music sales
online belongs to Apple with iTunes/iPod

I you go to a website that used Flash then you need Flashplayer. Go to a site that used Shockwave, you need that, etc. You CAN pick which media player you want to use. Trust me when I say you aren't using much of your hdd capacity to have all these programs on the computer.

They are not all necessary to have. If you want the one that takes precedence, it's Flash player. Flash is installed on 90% of the browsers now. Quick time, I think, was before flash, but flash is the big dog. If you need to buy a product for a website, I would suggest flash.
