Wife and I both need to work full time, in Boston area. We are going to have a baby, and it looks like my wife would be working full time just to pay for the daycare cost, is it out of line for her to ask for an increase? if not, it doesn't make sense for her to work there.

She needs to research what to going rate for her job is. If others earn more for similar work or she does more than other do for the same pay, she can justify asking for a raise. Often when child care is considered, both parents working actually doesn't make sense.

Your wife can ask this way:
As my expenses are increasing and the job is not going to add value to me unless there is a hike.
Logically the employer will understand that your wife can continue only if the job meets her expenses. Hence he needed to take a call.
