I just got a new computer and it says it has 1 GB RAM. But when I view my properties of the computer it says 768MB RAM. I don't think that equals 1GB. I have Win Vista. Help please.

Onboard video is sharing (or borrowing) it. Try installing a "real" graphics card there and that FULL 1Gb becomes available to the system again. Your 3D graphics should also improve a lot.

Most computers come with an Integrated graphics card as opposed to a dedicated graphics card. Though these integrated cards are cheaper, there are several disadvantages, one of which being the effect you are noticing right now. Memory will either be dynamically allocated or fixed to graphics processing, which will be significantly more intense in Vista because of the Aero interface. If you want to save this graphics memory, the intel utility included on your machine will allow you to limit the amount dedicated to your card, or you can disable the Aero interface which will put less of a performance draw on your system.

Either way, the effect is normal. To help alleviate this problem, especially if you are looking to keep Vista as your primary operating system would be to increase the amount of ram in your computer up to 2gb. You should notice a definite performance increase in your computer.

Most likely cause is that you have onboard graphics, or your current video card shares ram to improve performance.

You can either install more ram, or install a video card that does not use your RAM.

Video card is stealing some ram. Normal.

Good idea to get another 1GB stick and install it.

Vista will fly with 2GB.

Max is 3GB for 32bit systems.

If you need more check and see if you can reduce the allocation of system RAm from the Video card back to sytem resources.
This setting would be in the BIOS.

dont worry about it. that is because part of your ram is taken up for graphics, etc. my computer came with 512 mb but only shows 488mb. good surfing.
