Van Halen 1 has got to be the first and best to buy. Women and Children First is also a classic disc. I know a couple people here said to get OU812 for the Hagar era but I would suggest 5150. Pure rocking from beginning to end.

Absolutely Van Halen (1)
When my friends and I heard "Eruption" in the (late) 70's, it blew us away.
Eddie Van Halen's penultimate guitar solo.
David Lee Roth when he had something to prove.
Can't beat it.

Fair Warning - was definitely the hardest rocking album they released. I think Ed's best guitar work is on this album with songs; Unchained, So This Is Love, Mean Street, and Dirty Movies.
Of course the two biggest sellers were VH 1 and 1984.
All the stuff they did with Dave was great.
I really only liked the first two albums with Sammy, 5150 and 0u812.
