I was considering a big move from East coast to west coast for graduate school. Is Monterey a nice place to meet people, settle down, and have some fun outside of school time? My other choices were Montreal and Toronto. But the cold....

GO FOR IT!!! Okay I will tell you that CA is very expensive to live in, but the weather, the views, wildlife and PEOPLE make it all worth wild! I did my last few years of school in CA and LOVED every minute of it! Some of my best memories are in Monterey. There are tons of festivals that go on there, tons of outdoor things you can do and new people coming in and out all the time. It really has that "small" town feel. The great thing is you are in a good location and can be in some "major" cities in no time. The other great thing is that you are close to places that are great for long weekends! The whales are up in Monterey every year, it never snows and the temp is always cool and wonderful, what is not to love? There are several websites that you can check out to help you, I would also contact the chamber of commerce and ask them for your location package, FREE service that gives you stats on the city, cost of living ect.. very helpful. I think you would have a good time! Good luck!

Montery is a beautiful place - and very, very upscale and expensive. It is a nice place to visit, however.

Being from Philly, if you were raised there, you would stand out like a sore thumb. I know, I lived in that area (Central California) for almost 10 years...... They are very strange people...who find "east coast people" to be far, far down the food chain.

Monterey is beautiful. There are some things to do there and what isn't there, is not a too far drive to San Jose or even SF.
