The question says, "The sum of two consecutive integers is one less than twice the greater integer"?

Explain it to me please? ^_^

Thats not funny, second answer, i'm under stress now, i'm a freshman. But anyways, i just understood it. The twisting of words got me baffled. But now i get it thanks

The sum of two consecutive integers (x & x+1) is one less than twice the greater integer (2(x+1)-1)
So:

x+(x+1)=2(x+1)-1
x+x+1=2x+2-1
2x+1=2x+1
2x-2x=1-1
0=0

Since you end up with 0=0, the answers are infinite. This means that any two consecutive integers will fullfill the statement.

IF you let x equal the smaller integer, then the larger,sice the 2 are consecutive, would be x+1. Then "The sum of the two" is

x + x +1, or 2x + 1,

and that "is one less than twice the greater integer", so you have an equation that looks like

2x + 1 + 1 = 2(x + 1) which is equivalent to

2x + 2 = 2x + 2 == (subtract 2 from both sides)

2x = 2x == (now subtract 2x from both sides)

0 = 0

What this means is that the question is true for ANY integer! And if you think about it and can mentally untwist what the question states, you'll see that it is obvious - a number plus the next number is equal to 2 times the larger number minus 1. Get it?

Ok, but lets split it up to make it easier to understand. First off, what is "the sum of two consecutive integers"? Actually, first what is an integer? That's basically any number, 0, or a negative number. For example, 1, 5, 15, -21 ,0 , blah blah blah. Secondly, consecutive means, for example, 1 and 2, -5 and -6, or 105 and 106. So the sum of any of those examples will do. Got it?
Now, for example, lets take 1 and 2. The sum is 1+2 or 3. The second part of ur statements says take if you the larger of two (2, in this case) and multiply by 2 and subtract 1 that should equal the sum of the two integers (remember 1+2?) And when we do that, we that thats the case! They both equal 3!

Consecutive integers means that they are in order. (in consecutive order 2 comes after 3, 4 after 5 etc...) Basically, you are adding 1 each time. Therefore, if the first number is x the second number has to be x + 1. Sum means adding them up. So, the sum of two consecutive integers is x + x +1. Is means equal to. One less than twice the greater means double the bigger number and subtract one. x + 1 is the bigger number. 2(x + 1) - 1. Put it all together and you get: x + x + 1 = 2 (x + 1) -1. Now you just need to solve for x.

easy--substitute ANY two integers and test if this is true. Take for example 2 and 3, which are consecutive. Is the sum (5) one less than twice the larger ?(2 times 3=6) answer YES...try another set: this time use 7 and 8... Is 7 plus 8 (15) one less than twice 8 (16) ? again yes, so the answer to the question is always TRUE as long as the integers are POSITIVE.

qman doesn't even know the difference between "your"
and "you're". Here are the facts:
You have two consecutive integers; call them i and i+1
Put the question into mathematical form: their sum is 1 less
than twice the greater ( i+1 ) so we can say:
i + i + 1 = 2(i + 1) - 1 If we simplify, we get:
2i + 1 = 2i + 2 - 1 = 2i + 1
The above statement is an identity; that is, it will hold
for ANY two consecutive integers. Try it and see.

integers are x, x+1. So x+x+1 = 2(x+1)-1, and 2x+1 = 2x + 2 -1, and this results in 1 = 1. So true for all integers.

Let x = smaller integer, x + 1 = the greater

x + x + 1 + 1 = 2(x + 1)
2x + 2 = 2x + 2

This problem can't be solved.

that means the two numbers are one after another (consecutive; 3&4, 101&102) and if you add them together then the amount you get (the sum) is going to be one less then the amount you get when you multiply the bigger number by two.
