This is almost impossible to answer, because style has a massive impact on how much people like the book.there are so many great authors it really is impossible to say. Furthermore, it depends what country you live in. But this is my own personal list. Most famous doesn't necessarily mean best even though the best can be the most famous. This is what I think...In no particular order...This is from the Western tradition...I'll give you 25...

Shakespeare
Homer
Dante
Chaucer
Milton
Neichtze
Author(s) of Bible---if it's God...he sure as hell is famous
Voltaire
Thomas Paine
Ernest Hemingway
Agatha Christie
J.R.R. Tolkien
Cervantes
Steinbeck
Faulkner
Dickens
Austen
Rowling
Twain
Joyce
Tolstoy
King
Asimov
Sartre
Borges

You don't know some of these people but that is because your young. Trust me.

Really DAVID, I don't know what the heck this question even means...it's that word "famous" that's the problem. You mean most copies sold, most translated, most references when googled--I mean, how do we define this? As far as copies sold goes, Horatio Alger came close to a BILLION copies--so maybe it's him. Most translated: L Ron Hubbard (the novelist), J K Rowling and Sidney Sheldon hold sway. And I don't even have time to count all the google hits...but you can sort of see what we're up against.

1. William Shakespeare
2. Charles Dickens
3. Mark Twain
4. J.K. Rowling (it's true!!)
5. Stephen King

Agatha Christie, surprisingly, has sold almost as many copies of her work as the Bible. I was considering her for the list, but not many people really recognize her as a great author anymore.
