When I signed up for DirecTV service I was told that it required a 1-year commitment. 19 months later I cancel service. 1 month later a fee shows up on my credit card bill for $125 for early cancellation. Not only did they misinform me when I signed up, they didn't mention the fee when I was canceling service. I called, they said it was a 2 year requirement. Is there anything I can do to fight this?

At this point, you are probably on the hook. Next time READ the contact before you sign.

if you didn't receive advanced equipment when you started (dvr or HD receiver), then yes, it was for a 1-year commitment. HOWEVER, if at any time you leased additional equipment from the company they you WERE in fact under a new service commitment. Based off of the fee, that new commitment (if it was a 2-year one) started in your 9th or 10th month of service (it's 12.50 per each month without service)

The only way to reverse this is to reactivate your services and agree to finish up the commitment.

DIRECTV service commitment is:
One year if you had a regular receiver (no TiVo or DVR)
Two year if you had an advanced receiver (with a DVR)
