I recently bought a brand new oboe (Buffet brand) around May. I've been taking extremely good care of it ever since. However I've noticed today that my Eb key seems to be broken! When ever I press it, it remains down and doesn't go back up. I am very desperate since all my D now sound like Eb. Can it still be under warranty? If it is, will it take long for the people to fix it? Can I do anything to adjust the key? Also, if I send it to fix somewhere else, how much would it approx. cost? Advaice is greatly apreciated! Thanks alot!

Hi Annie, in addition to looking for a spring that is out of place or broken you might want to check the following things.

Have you tightened any of the mechanism screws, especially any that might be at the end of the pivot rods? If they are too tight the keys are not going to move freely.

Sometimes a screw or rod may protrude just enough to prevent a nearby key from moving properly.

Have you oiled the key mechanism since you got your oboe? The mechanism should be lightly oiled from time to time where key rods, screws, etc. move against each other in order to move freely.

Good luck in finding the problem.

My first thought would be that a small spring has become detached. Look under that key for a small wire sticking out, maybe an inch or less long. There should be a little hook to hold it - almost like the one that is on a jewelry pin. With something tine, see if you can reattach that spring. If it is a *sprung shut* key, perhaps the spring is attached on the wrong side, keeping the key open when it should be shut.

This has happened countless times to my flute students - check this first before you panic!

what everyone else said and...

check to make sure it's not a sticky pad. clean the pad (your teacher or any nearby advanced flute player knows how) and make sure that's not the deal.

I'd def. check first for the spring and then for a stuck pad. Adjusting your own rods and screws is probably a bad idea so if you've done so - take it to the local repair shop. ☺

I'd suspect that an instrument as new as this one is indeed still under warranty.

Good luck.
