The reason that Egypt has been called a gift of the Nile is due to the fact that if the Nile did not exist there could never have been a developed civilisation in Egypt.
The Nile and its annual inundation were the life line of ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians realised this very early in the development of their incredible civilisation and linked the gifts of the Nile river to the gifts and disasters brought upon them by the various Gods associated with the Nile and agriculture.
The Nile could bring abundance or it could bring disaster in flooding. There were even times when the Nile did not reach it required level to sufficiently flood the fields and that brought famine to the land.
The Egyptians developed a way of knowing exactly when the Nile would arrive and how high it would rise. This was done with the use of a celestial calender focusing in the rising of Sirius the dog star which was the brightest star in the sky at that time of year.
The height of the inundation was measured by Nilometers that were placed at strategic points along the Nile and when the flooding reached one a messenger would ride to alert the people further along the river.
Each year almost without fail the inundation or flooding of the Nile would begin in early July. This not only brought water in abundance but it also brought with it each year a few more centimetres of rich dark loam that was rich in natural nutrients.
It is only in recent years after the building of the Aswan dam and Lake Nasser that farmers have had to ever use fertiliser for their crops to grow to abundance.

The area where Egypt is located is desert. It does not rain and there are no other rivers. The Nile is the only source of water for Egypt. Herodotus the Greek historian said that and it is very true. The Nile gave that area a gift which is Egypt. Because of the Nile, people started to plant near it and waited for the crops rather than moving around looking for wells of water. This resulted in settling down and observing the stars, marking down the beginning of the Nile flooding every year, hence writing and inventing the calendar. Civilization developed in Egypt because of all this.
