You can start by filling out an application that you can usually obtain in your downtown administration building. Once you go there they can direct you in the right place and they will also fill out your taxes for you as long as you provide them with all of your recipts. Anyone can obtain a business license, but they want to make sure that the business owner does have any felonies, have ever filed bankruptcy and some other personal questions. You can also start your business by trying to get a grant from the government. There is free money that you can apply for but you have to have the resources in order to get it, and if you are really serious about starting your own business then you should apply for the money. The first place to start is with a law office and find out if they have any lawyers on staff that know how to write a grant in order for you to start your own business. And another type of person that would probably know how to write the grant are school teachers. It can be costly like 3000.00 to have the write up the grant and do the research, but it is worth it, because you can ask for whatever amount of money that you feel it would take to start your business. You can also go online to do the research, but I have tried and there was alot of things that I did not understand and it is time consuming. But if you are serious I would suggest that you go for it, because alot of my friends started thier own business this way and are still in business.

Since you've never been in business before, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. You have to determine whether you'll start a web based business or one with a store front. I'd call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.

The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting a photography business and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you'll concentrate on (your market ) and how you'll go after them.

You'll need to register the business with your state controller's office and make sure that you have any city and county licenses if any are needed where you live. All of this will come out in a business plan.

Good Luck

You'll need a business license--go to google.com and type in the name of your state and the words department of revenue. Some states walk you right through the whole process really easily.

Here's Illinois's site: http://www.business.illinois.gov/starting.cfm

You better get an IRS tax consultant -- before you open so that you understand the rules of sole proprietership... Yes, go to the sales tax office and purchase a certificate..
