I moved out and now I am being charged for this: My old roommate had a pet (we were both on lease) he didn't pay deposit then moved out and took pet with him. That was a while ago. There is damage from pet I said I would pay but they want me to pay damage AND deposit now even though I am gone and pet was his. They also won't tell me how old paint or carpet was or how much the old tenant paid for their damages on carpet (which was still there when I lived there)

Roomate was on lease! To clarify. My biggest issue is why they won't show me how old carpet is and why they are charging me damages AND deposit

They can go after any / everyone who signed the lease to try an collect all they can .

Personally , I'd wait & let them take me to small claims .
It costs you nothing to attend , and they have to answer how much they collected from the others on the lease (they can lie , talk to the others yourself )
Line up ALL your ducks before court time .

Why would they want you to pay a deposit if you've moved? The deposit is only allowed to be used for damages. If you pay the damages, then there is no need for extra deposit. Also, they have to give you an itemized charge sheet for what was paid from the deposit. If anything is ridiculously high, you can try to prove that they are overcharging you or threaten to take them to small claims court. Most of the time, it isn't worth the hassle to deal with you and they'll jsut pay you out to be rid of you.

Sorry, but unless you have pics to prove your case, you are out of luck.
