Democracy = one citizen one vote.
Republic = citizens elect officials to vote on their behalf.

The United States is a Democratic Republic. Every citizen, 18 years and older, has the right to vote. We elect officials to create, enact, and enforce our laws for us.

A republic is any representative government. The representatives may be appointed or elected.

A democracy is where the people are the government. They have a say in what is and is not the law.

In the United States we have a democratic republic which is both a democracy and a republic because we elect those who represent us in our government. Our states and many big cities are also democratic republics.

A republic is a form of government where representatives are elected to make laws and policy decisions. A democracy is a form of government where the people directly control policy and laws. The United States and all state legislatures would be examples of republics. Most city governments, with the exception of a few, are also republics.

For a state, the size of the population makes democracy almost infeasible. Every issue that must be decided on must be taken to a public vote. It would be a very ineffective and inefficient form of government for a state. A republic clearly is a better choice.

The US is a Constitutional Republic.
It is commonly referred to as a democracy. However to paraphase the world book encyclopedia, the term is confusing as there are governments that call themselves democracies that really aren't.
The US is not a democracy (pure or direct democracy), although it is considered a representative democracy.

In a democracy you would make decisions on issues yourself. In a republic, you vote for people who make these decisions for you.
