0.0015625 square mile (1 square mile is equal to 640 acres)

I think that the acre was the area that an ox could plough in a day, which was a chain (22 yards) by a furlong (220 yards). A chain is 1/80 of a mile and a furlong is 1/8 of a mile so an acre is 1/640 of a square mile (or 4840 square yrds).
