I have to fill in my application for admission (Graduate School) the titles of the professors that gave me the letters of recommendation.What should I write?PhD?or just Professor?
I am from Romania, and I am not sure about the US academic ranks.....

Dr. would be appropriate if they have a Ph.D.; Professor if they do not.

Here's what I've seen most people do - if they teach at a university, then it's Prof. Smith. If they do research at a university or national lab but don't really teach, then it's Smith, PhD (or Dr. Smith). Usually, the title of 'professor' assumes they have a doctorate, so it's both more descriptive than Dr. and a slightly higher rank.

if they have a PhD you could say Dr. [name]...but very few are picky about titles but always refer to them as Professors not...Ms. Mrs. or Mr. until you have met them and know their personal preference...
but to be safe if they have PhD's refer to them as Dr. [name] other than that refer to them as Professor [name]...

some are picky about the Dr title mostly b/c they worked their "rear-ends" off for their PhD...
