Life is a biochemical engine that must chug along all the time.
Biochemical reactions are: catabolic and anabolic.
One of the main functions of catabolism is to provide energy.
Anabolism builds the structure and body, and hence required too.

Metabolism can be broken down into two phases: anabolism and catabolism. Catabolism breaks down larger molecules and makes energy such as ATP for the organism to function. Anabolism, which required energy, builds the necessary nucleic acids etc needed for the organism to survive. Without metabolism, the organism wouldn't be able to grow. Hope this helps!

Because they are programmed by their nucleic acids (DNA) to do so. In other words, they are automatically promted by their genetic code to perform the series of chemical reactions that we called metabolism. In turn, metabolism allows reproduction, an organism ultimate function.
