I live with my boyfriend and now his brother just moved in. Any tips on how to keep the apartment smelling nice and looking clean without having to scrub all day long? We all know those boys aren't going to be doing any of the cleaning and candles just won't cut it.

EmgeeAlex, I'm glad you're such a saint in the household chores aspect, but for being nice and answering questions; you're kind of a jerk.

Wow! I really can't believe how judgmental people can be over a question about keeping a home smelling good. Things can be clean and still smell not so great sometimes. Must be nice to be so perfect and odor free!! I would suggest that when the guys are gone, spray the all of the furniture fabrics, carpet, curtains, pillows and whatever other fabric surfaces with lavender fa-breeze. Really spray it on there!! That should help. Keep kitchen and bathroom wipes on hand for quick clean up. Oust fans work well too. You might want to get some sort of toilet freshener that goes in the tank to keep the bathroom smelling better too. Good luck!! Just remember cleanliness and order are not the most important things to look for in a mate!!

For starters just because you are a woman doesn't mean you get to be the only one to do household chores.. Everyone that lives there should be pitching in... Everyone should have their own hamper and be responsible for his/her laundry... The hampers can be kept in his/her room and managed by the person that wears the clothes.. If you want to do your bf's laundry great fine but, don't bother with the brothers it falls under the "not your problem" area...
To keep the common areas clean you should take turns either by week(s) or daily on who vacuum's, does dishes (whether that's loading/unloading the dishwasher or hand washing and putting away)... If necessary keep a schedule of chores and who does them.. If you must put all the chores into a hat and draw them weekly or monthly whatever works.. It's then his/her responsibility to do said chores.. You are all adults living on your own and should be able to handle household chores... I like to have a basic routine especially for the bathroom/kitchen... Get some handy antibacterial wipes and keep them in the bathroom/kitchen.. I like to wipe the countertops/and toilet with them everyday.. Especially, if you have to share a bathroom with men.. It may take some "gentle" reminders at first to get the men to follow suit but, in time they can be taught to clean-up after themselves... In the bathroom I like to keep a spray bottle with bleach/water mixed about 50/50 and BEFORE I put on nice clothes.. I spray the tub/tile surround and let it sit.. It keeps mold from forming and it disenfects the bathroom.. Just wipe with a damp rag to keep smelling fresh and clean... It also helps to mop the floor with vinegar/water once a week.. It will smell yucky at first but, it will keep the floor clean and NOT react with bleach....
Also, have everyone keep their shoes in their rooms in their closets or under the bed... Shoes are stinky, if you have a covered balcony or porch put them out there to air out if it's not raining...and avoid if you can wearing outside shoes in the house that will keep a lot of dirt from coming into the house and soiling the carpet and smelling and keeping control of clutter...
The other "rule" is that everyone is responsible for putting his/her stuff away.. Prevent a "common" area from being a dumping ground for in coming mail, bills, receipts, books, magazines.. Give everyone a basket the smaller the better and put his/her things into it that DO NOT belong in the room.. They should remove the basket with the contents out of sight... I have to do this with my husband in our office which is right by the garage he has a small basket in it I put the days mail, reciepts etc.. He puts his keys/wallet in their and I don't have clutter everywhere. Have a place for everything and everything in it's place ! As for cleaning.. try and do a bit here and there daily. Vacuum everyday at least once !

Put a hamper in their bathroom so dirty clothes dont wind up on the floor.. keep incense or room spray around ... if they leave dirty dishes, put the dishes on their bed so they learn to clean up after themselves... and when in doubt, fake tears, so they feel guilty for making such a mess and dont do it anymore lol

You are doing this and no ring? Are you stupid?

My mother, LEGALLY married to my father, had three boys and a husband, raised us to NOT pee on the floor, wash the bathroom, iron our clothes, make our beds, vacuum, not to leave anything in the sink, help her keep house, do laundry, cook, and anything else she had to do.

Now, my wife and I share all the household chores, the house is immaculate and we raised two boys who also know how to clean, cook, and do laundry.

There's carpet powder that freshens up.. The oust fan is nice. Glade is pretty cheap! Just keep some fresheners in there!

First of all, those "boys" better start helping out. We're living in the 21st century. It's all about equality. If they don't help out, they need to be "stepping out". :)
