How has the overall trend been? American muscle like the Camaro, Challenger, Mustang... pited against the Supra, Lancer Evo, Sti... sorry, i'm still learning all about cars.

I'm looking to buy a new car though, somewhere in '10 or '11. I currently own Hyundai Tuscani, looking to probably trade it in.. my top choices for the future are either the new Challenger or the new Supra.. (hopefully the FT-HS will not bear the Supra name)..

So between those two cars, which one would be the one owning the streets? And how is the overall trend of American muscle vs Asian cars?

Asian cars, namely Japanese, are well engineered, well built and very fast. New American muscle cars are -- suprise! -- exactly like the Japanese cars only bigger and faster. This wasn't always true. The demise of the domestic automobile industry came in the seventies when the big three was building crap cars that were too heavy, ugly, couldn't turn, couldn't stop, drank gas and fell apart daily. Then along came Honda, Datsun (Nissan) and Toyota. Suddenly Detroit realized that Americans were no longer going to 'buy American' unless they got their act together -- and soon. It's taken about twenty years but the build quality has finally reached a very good level, dependability is A+ and they are all VERY fast. Now that the muscle cars are making a comeback Detroit isn't going to make the same mistake twice. Americans want sexy, rear wheel drive cars with BIG V8 engines and the domestics are posied to deliver, Asia is not. Forget drifting, forget 'tuner cars' and forget giant paste-on wings and coffee can exhaust pipes. Compared to a muscle car they all look like toys. Japan had a really good run but it may be time for Americans to rule the streets again very, very soon...

American muscle cars have bounced back with a vengance and they are extremely popular, Ford sold 217K Mustangs last year, the Charger sells like crazy, the Challenger and Camaro are coming out and Americans are going crazy with the big hemi's and horsepowered engines..... the future.... American muscle cars are outselling the imports like crazy..... just look around and you will see. Not since the late 60's has the muscle car scene been so exciting and active...... it's great ;)

If I was you I would wait until both cars have gotten the kinks worked out of it. NEVER buy a brand new car, because if you do then you will be the Ginnie pig and have to deal with all of the problems. But for which one you should get, the Challenger is the ONLY choice. Get yourself a good ol' piece of American Muscle.

It's all about taste...
The way I see it, who is the best in "owning the street" as you put it, is depending on how much budget are you ready to spend on the car to own the street.

If your budget are under 250 grand (USD) Japanese cars are for you.

over than that American cars can out run Japanese cars easily.

this is because Japanese cars tend to have the smaller and fuel economic engine (even in their sport scar)

While American engine are not exactly fuel economic, but they are build with potential to handle huge horse power, even the chassis is build that way...

But in terms of control I imagine Japanese cars are better, remember power is nothing without control.

Me myself I prefer Japanese cars, special the AWD cars (subaru, R34)

American cars tend to be made weaker because of U.S. laws (things like safety, fuel economy and anti-smog). U.S. cars can go about 150 mph while many foreign muscle cars can go over 200 mph. You can get muscle cars that go 150mph for under $40,000 while those cars that go over 200 mph cost $150,000+. On the other side, there are few places in the U.S. to show off such speeds (and there will be fewer places in the future).

I think American cars will be have more show and no go in the future than foreign cars, but when playing chicken stick with American cars as they will probably keep you alive while those foreign cars are just caskets on wheels.

I'm bias towards Asian cars because I believe a real man attacks corners. Asian cars handle better; they take turns better. American cars are only good for going in a straight line.
